The big idea of growth and fixed mindsets are two different ideals which contribute to how people learn in and outside of the classroom. In the article, “Recognizing and Overcoming False Growth Mindset”, Carol Dweck explains that, “A growth mindset is the belief that you can develop your talents and abilities through hard work, good strategies, and help from others.” It stands in opposition to a fixed mindset, which is the belief that talents and abilities are unalterable traits, ones that can never be improved.” Carol Dweck wrote books and articles explaining more about the growth and fixed mindset. In a YouTube video called “Carol Dweck, Developing a Growth Mindset”, she mentioned a letter that a 13 year-old boy had sent her. The letter stated that he had read her book and tested out her growth mindset principle in three parts of his life. He then said that his results were that he's get higher grades, better relationship with his parents, better relationship with kids at school, and he realized that he had been wasting most of his life. This shows how the big idea of growth mindset has contributed to help improve a child’s life. This shows that the idea of growth mindset contributes to children’s lives in a good way.
It is clear that growth mindset encourages a finer attitude than fixed mindset. In an article by Marina Krakovsky, fixed and growth mindset are explained in several ways. Stated by Carol Dweck, “The key, she found, isn’t ability; it’s whether you look at the ability as something inherent that needs to be demonstrated or as something that can be developed” (p.1). To clarify she concludes there are different ways of thinking about success. For instance people can become discouraged by others success because of their fixed mindset. From this we can see that fixed mindset views ability negatively and makes others feel wrongly about something that could be portrayed positively. It is evident that growth mindset benefits in many different ways. In Carol Dweck’s studies she explains that a growth mindset is more suitable in experiencing and learning new things. Her studies are crucial to everyday life today because it has impacted most learning in school and in general life. This can relate to some people because they either congratulate others success or they are somewhat jealous of their success. This theory is further concluded in a Youtube video called “Growth Mindset Animation, “They will never reach their full potential. Failure is the most essential step to success. And as the growth mindset continues to improve they will overtake the rest.” Regarding this we can tell that growth mindset has altered student's first-hand thinking and success for the better. The big idea of growth and fixed mindsets contributing to how people learn in and outside of the classroom matters because whether or not you have a growth or fixed mindset it sets a path to how you learn. This is important because how you learn and what you learn will determine if you will become successful or not in the future. An idea as simple as a puzzle can easily show fixed and growth mindsets. In a fixed mindset they take negative criticism and shove it somewhere else in their brain. Because of this their brain does not grow and they become somewhat of an outcast deflecting anything bad that comes at them. We painted the fixed mindset puzzle red because it symbolizes a stop sign as if they’ve stopped trying to grow. They think where they are at in their level is okay because if they try their best one more time they know they will fail. But in a growth mindset the brain thrives on negative criticism and and the brain expands learning new information from their success or their fixed mistakes. We painted the growth mindset puzzle green because it shows they don’t stop growing. They don’t stop learning until their puzzle is complete. The small brain signifies fixed mindset and the bigger brain signifies growth mindset.
